"recognize when it may be necessary to do so and how to minimize the impact on a server system."

Anyone care to discuss this briefly? Generally, I know when the system needs a reboot without really thinking much about it (examples: new kernel, rare crash, etc.) Any obvious stuff I'm not thinking of here?

As for "how to minimize impact on a server": generally, I log in, run top(1), w(1), and 'netstat -anf inet' to make sure that I'm not disconnecting a dozen connections or users, and then go with it. Any thoughts?
